Downspout Leakage Troubles

This Chicago customer had downspout leakage troubles. The downspouts were leaking onto the walkway below, which would cause a lot of icing and was a continuous hazard.

We first removed the existing downspouts and took our measurements from them. We did, however, improve on their design by taking the time to include flanges for joining the two galvanized steel sections together. Had the original installer done this, they could have sealed the spouts as we did.

When we were done fitting the sections and extensions, all sestions were joined with stainless steel sheet metal screws, all joints acid washed, and soldered using a 50/50 solder of tin and lead. We even soldered the screw heads to prevent future oxidation.

The time we took to do this repair properly has saved the customer liability from the constant icing, the cost and aggravation of constantly having to break up and remove the ice, and provided peace of mind that they invested their repair budget wisely.
