Lansing, IL - Skylight Installation Project

Our valued customer contacted us about installing a skylight through his existing roof. He also wanted a warranty for the roofing associated with it. Since we agree that nobody should have to pay twice (once for the skylight installation and another for the roofing to go with it), we agreed to install the skylight, roof it in properly and issued a written one year leak-free warranty (this application will be leak-free as long as the roof is). This worked out well since, after several calls to local competitors (carpenters and handyman types), nobody would install the skylight AND warrant it waterproof. We were a perfect fit for the customer, since we are able to install and properly install the roofing around the skylight. This served him well.

Photo 1: The customer decided on the location of the skylight away from roof valleys and penetrations. We marked the layout and he approved it.

Photo 2: A preliminary cut was made with a reciprocating saw, then the circular saw was used to make the finish cuts through the plywood roof decking. Then the framing members were appropriately cut and headed off to complete the structural alterations.

Photo 3: Upon completion of the structural work and decking removal, the skylight was placed perfectly and screwed to the roof framing through the roof deck.

Photo 4: This shows the level of care taken to ensure watertightness. We wrapped the skylight curb entirely with GAF Weatherwatch ice and water barrier. This is needed not so much for icing conditions here, but for wind-driven rains that can blow upward against the natural flow of water during thunderstorms. Since the location of the new venting skylight is so close to the roof ridge, we carried our membrane up and over the peak. This will prevent driving rains from entering under the cap behind our flashings and entering at a point that would appear to be skylight related. This also covers any old nail holes from when we dis-assembled the roofing prior to cutting the roof.
